A distinguished panel of judges has selected Multi-Color Corporation North America Wine & Spirits as the winner of the coveted Best in Show Award at the 2022 TLMI Label Awards competition. Multi-Color Corporation has emerged as an annual fixture at the awards competition, earning recognition in a wide range of categories. For 2022, Multi-Color Corporation North America Wine & Spirits notched top honors for its One Stone label entry in the Offest, Wine & Spirits, Line, Prime category.

In addition to Best in Show, the One Stone label garnered Best in Class in its category. Beyond the One Stone entry, there were six other Best in Class winners. For 2022, Best in Class winners include Labeltronix, an AWT company, and Syracuse Label & Surround Printing. Plus, McDowell Label, a Resource Label Group company, was recognized with an impressive four Best in Class wins in numerous categories.

The annual TLMI Label Awards competition recognizes innovative printing and rewards technical achievement in all areas of the narrow web industry, including tags and labels, cartons, flexible packaging, nonwoven pressure sensitive products and more. The competition distinguishes the finest efforts of the association’s converter members throughout the previous 12-month period.

TLMI has also announced several other notable winners, as well. Kathy Alaimo, CEO, Syracuse Label & Surround Printing, has been honored as the Converter of the Year, while Jim Shiebley, retiring EVP, sales and marketing, Wausau Coated Products, has been bestowed with Supplier of the Year honors. Keith Grimm, vice president of Label Traxx, has earned the prestigious distinction of Volunteer of the Year.

Challenges: This sharp wine label required stochastic 20 micron CMYK with hot foil, overprinting, flexo varnish, rotary silkscreen, flatbed sculpted embossing, and diecutting – all in one press pass. The label was printed with a Nilpeter MO4 press and featured screens from Kocher + Beck, anilox rolls from Harper, and inks and coatings from Siegwerk.

Entry: Clyde May’s 5 Year Single Barrel Whiskey
Challenges: This portfolio always presents McDowell Label with new and exciting challenges from design to print execution – and this label has it all: the exceptionally fine vignettes and transition of screen tones and color provide a visual depth and appearance of aged detail that is fitting to the brand essence criteria. The detailed and precise embossing, as well as the use of patterned matte and heavy-toothed sandpaper varnishes, add a subtle yet significant amount of brand augmentation that, without tight register, would not have the desired effect. The label was printed on a Gallus press and utilized cylinders and dies from RotoMetrics, as well as Fasson substrates and inks and coatings from Siegwerk and ACTEGA, respectively.

Entry: RLG Tequila
Challenges: This converter needed to digitally print the bottom layer before adding a top layer of material. Then, re-insertion on the digital for top layer print was required before finishing press for foil, emboss, screen. The label also has a digital spot color. The label was printed on an HP Indigo press, featuring substrates from Wausau Coated Products.

Entry: Blueberry Hard Seltzer
Challenges: SLSP utilized a Nilpeter printing press and plates from DuPont to produce the sharp graphics required on this craft beverage label with Fasson substrates.

Entry: P6
Challenges: The P6 original label received an upgraded look this year with new screen-tone values that serve as a supporting backdrop to the bold, brand iconic use of domed honeycombs, as well as the P6 logo and the pattern sandpaper and gloss varnishes. The art allowed no room for error with multiple use of curved, straight, and very sharp graphic design elements. A Gallus press was once again utilized for this label, which was printed on UPM Raflatac substrates.

Challenges: This label required super detailed line art, with the
precise use of holographic foil stamping and tight registered doming to enhance the product and graphic features. This label was printed with support from Gallus, RotoMetrics, Interflex, Klockner Pentaplast,
and Siegwerk.

Entry: Maplewood: Cryo Double Charlatan
Challenges: This label was printed for a customer that has a very particular vision for how their artwork should look. Blue Label made sure to Pantone color match, process the white file, and color calibrate all the presses to make sure there is color consistency in all of the digital runs. “The challenges in color combinations and consistency are ones that we are proud to accomplish every time,” the company says.

Entry: Life is Beautiful
Challenges: Another special edition collaboration, this shrink sleeve maximizes the use of four-color process without employing the typical, boring photographic image. McDowell employed its crisp-dot-technology to achieve the most highly impactful gamut of color via four-color process. There is virtually no single, discernible point of transition from the neon-esque representation of the brand’s logo, the “Life is Beautiful” logo, or the massively-smooth screen-tones in
the backgound.

Entry: Backcountry Trailbreaker Pale Ale
Challenges: After calling on this account for three years, an order was received. This label switched the customer from silver metalized stock to a white BOPP and printed with silver ink instead of simulating on the silver stock. The converter formulated 100% matches with Pantone inks to the process samples being printed.

RESOURCE LABEL GROUP
Resource Label Group received the Frosty in this category, as the judges all felt RLG exhibited great examples of how its sustainability efforts have relevance to others in the industry. Not only did RLG showcase the reduction of its environmental impacts, but the converter showed exactly how it reached those numbers. The judges were also impressed that RLG maintains a connection to academia for both workforce and innovation, and has a sustainability fellow on staff each year. Plus, NOSCO received special recognition in this category for its social engagement efforts.

ICONEX
The judges were extremely impressed with Iconex’s level of social impact. Not only is Iconex actively engaged in sharing information within a converting association it has created and leads, but the company also has a very active CEO and has written an Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) report about all the benefits that its employees enjoy. Iconex also wrote about how all of this can be replicated by any company, with commitment and a group of motivated employees.

According to the judges, Sun Chemical “knocked it out of the park” in its entry. The company’s “extremely strong” contributions were based on its products, reduced impact on the environment, training, seminars, sharing information, and active social media.

Syracuse Label & Surround Printing wowed the judges with the intricate level of details in its submission. SLSP has earned Sustainable Green Printing Partnership certification and is 100% landfill free. In addition, the company has a focus on employee wellness, social impact, and a sophisticated tracking protocol for all its impacts. This is an employee-owned company, which further shows the investment in employees.
